Every year, Carytown in Richmond, VA, plays host to the Watermelon Festival. This was the 26th year, I believe, and I just wanted to commemorate the festival with this image depicting exactly what it is all about!

On a recent trip to Richmond's Aviation Museum, I took the opportunity to snap a couple of photos of the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. It is an intimidating and beautiful piece of equipment. I wonder just how awesome it was to pilot such a craft!

Even in the "Concrete Jungle" of NYC, beauty finds a way to shine through.

This year in NYC, the only city fireworks were on the Hudson River (west side) which meant that those of us who were unwilling to fight through the tens of thousands of people that were crammed into the few good blocks for viewing the fireworks were basically shut out. The city said that they were going to shoot the fireworks high enough for all to see, but this was about as good as it got.

Growing up, like most kids, summer was the best. No school, no homework, no teachers, lots of running and biking and laughter and long days, warm nights, lightning bugs, flash thunder storms, long rainbows, fishing in the James, swimming at the pool. But nothing brought me joy like fresh cut grass and evenings at Dogwood Dell (aside from all of the running and biking and laughter). Mom and Dad would drag us to the Dell for a picnic and performance by some traveling troupe or other. I don’t remember the plays, but I do remember the food. Cold fried chicken, meatloaf sandwiches, chips, potato salad. I also remember the joy of running up and down the stone steps, gallivanting about at night past my bed time with friends. I remember scrapes and grass stains and the joy of so many people outside. I remember the smell of the trees and the crunch of the gravel. I remember the joy of Mom and Dad.

Urban life, to many, is both beautiful and ugly at the same time. With a little help, and the right frame of reference, it can be beautiful all the time. This view of the Manhattan skyline is from Taxi Beach in Queens, one of my favorite summer hang-outs!

As I walk across her back I am reminded of childhood

Her history is mine or maybe mine is hers
Stories she’s heard a million times again
Generation after generation sharing in her spirit
Partaking in her soul
With every passing step her power grows
Her mystique is strengthened
Another story is made
Another story is embellished
Another life is touched
She is complicated
The doorway to the world on one side and the key to my soul on the other
An impossible act of poise
It is her trade
Her pleasure
It is what makes her precious
Loved
Feared
Adored
Her strength is unyielding
Yet gentle to the touch and easy on the eyeNone can duplicate her for she is unique

The next time someone calls you "fish face", perhaps you won't feel so bad. This is a picture of a fountain at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, one of my favorite places to visit in the neighborhood.
